Maestro Ken Staton
For those inspired, but perhaps a bit intimidated by the recent Reuben-Clay showdown on "American Idol," the University of Hawaii at Hilo . has the cure for your summertime blues: the UH Hilo Summer Chorus.
"The chorus is open to everyone regardless of experience," said Maestro Ken Staton, UH Hilo Affiliate Professor of Music, who is also the music director for the Kona Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. "Of course, everyone should be able to 'carry a tune,' but there are no formal auditions."
No, Simon Cowell won't be lurking front and center; Staton will be the director and Michael Springer, UH Hilo alumnus and a music teacher at Kamehameha Schools East Hawai'i, is the accompanist. There will be two credits at the end of the summer as the chorus is actually a continuation of MUSIC 102, University Chorus, a regular class during the academic year, which is repeatable for credit.
"We would like to make the chorus available to students, alumni and community members who would like to have a pleasant, low-pressure singing experience during the summer," Staton said. "We would also like a mix of ages."
The first session begins on Tuesday, June 17. There will be two sessions weekly. The minimum number of applicants to hold this course is 13 and the decision on holding the course will be made on June 6. Music repertoire will be chosen by Staton based on the number of applicants and distribution of voices into sopranos, altos, tenors and basses.
Cost of the two-credit hours is $268. To register, please call the College of Community Education and Continuing Service (CCECS) at (808) 974-7787 or register online at http://uhh1.uhh.hawaii.edu.
