For Immediate Release
Copies of University of Hawai`i at Hilo: A College in the Making are still available at various outlets. Since its release in November 2001, sales currently top $1,600. All proceeds go toward a scholarship fund in the author's name.
The first 46 years of the history of UH Hilo has been documented in a new publication written by both Frank T. Inouye, director of UH Hilo from 1952-57, and former Chancellor Dr. Edward J. Kormondy, 1986-1993. The book is a must read for anyone interested in the evolution of the institution and wanting an inside look at higher education.
Rather than a historical documentary, the book is a compilation of the writings of Inouye and the reflections of former chancellors of UH Hilo, culminating with Kormondy's chapter, "UH Hilo: Challenges and Opportunities," and his epilogue. The book also includes chronological highlights, listings of all former academic and administrative leaders and a list of donors. Although the book is written from the insiders' viewpoint, the writing is carefully unsentimental and at times provocative: "One surprising fact about this institution's growth is that it grew, like Topsy, relatively orphaned at an early age and with little support or direction from the University of Hawai'i's main center in Manoa Valley." (p.1) Because Inouye passed away quite suddenly in 1996 before completing the manuscript, the proceeds from book sales ($15 per copy) will go into the Frank T. Inouye Scholarship Fund at UH Hilo. Publication costs have been covered in advance through private donations.
The book is available at Basically Books (808-961-0144), The Book Gallery (808-935-4943), or Borders (808 933-1410) in Hilo or may be ordered directly from the UH Press (808-956-8257).
