Native Hawaiian spring graduates top 160

A total of 164 students of Hawaiian ancestry at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo and Hawai`i Community are candidates for graduation at spring commencement ceremonies, May 17 and 18 at the UH Hilo New Gym.


Eighty students from UH Hilo and 84 from HawCC will receive various associate degrees, bachelor degrees and teaching certificates. One graduate in particular will make history, when Hiapo Perreira receives the first master of arts degree in Hawaiian Language and Literature from UH Hilo.
"This has been a milestone year in academics for the Hawaiian community and the Hawaiian student service programs," said Kalani Makekau-Whittaker, coordinator of UH Hilo's Native Hawaiian support program. "We congratulate the Native Hawaiian students who have applied for Spring 2002 graduation and wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
