UH Hilo holds first student research conference
Three students were honored for their presentations at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Applied Learning Experiences (ALEX) Student Research conference held recently on campus. The event marked the University’s first multi-disciplinary student research conference that focused primarily on undergraduate research.
A total of 37 students representing a wide range of social and natural science disciplines presented their research through table-top displays, poster sessions and podium presentations. Also participating were 22 faculty members, including six who served as presenters for break-out sessions and judges.
The three students honored for outstanding performance in their research and overall presentations in the various categories were:
• Chelsea Alward, Senior, Business Administration: “The Influence of Self-concept and Reference Group Influence on the Consumption of Tattoos.” Table-top presentation
• Louise Economy, Senior, Marine Science: “Submarine Groundwater Discharge and CO2 Dynamics at Kiholo Bay, Hawai'i.” Poster session presentation
• Cara Sumida, recent graduate, Biology: “Identification of Novel Protein Interactions with Human Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptors.” Podium presentation
The Office of Applied Learning Experiences was created in August 2012 to support the University's strategic plan by helping to create real-world learning experiences across a broad range of areas, including internships, community-based projects, service learning, practica, research, and capstone projects. Ideally, these experiences occur in the local community.
