“Lighting the Fire” is Hawaiʻi TESOL annual conference Feb. 16

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo English Language Institute (ELI) hosts the annual Hawai‘i Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Hawaiʻi TESOL) conference on Saturday, February 16 from 9-4:30 pm on the UH Hilo campus. The conference is open to the general public. The conference fee ranges from $15-$40.

This year’s theme is “Lighting the Fire,” and focuses on how instructors and learners can ignite, innovate and interact in the classroom. Plenary speaker Dr. Christina Higgins, associate professor in the Department of Second Language Studies at UH Manoa, will speak on English as a global language and its implications on the teaching of English and culture for intercultural awareness and cross-cultural understanding. Workshops and poster presentations given by ESL professionals from across the islands will be presented throughout the day.

The ELI is a unit of the College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS) and recently received accreditation from the Commission on English Language Accreditation.

“Hosting of the 2013 Hawai‘i TESOL conference is one way that the ELI supports UH Hilo’s commitment to bringing a global community to our campus,” said Farrah-Marie Gomes, interim dean of CCECS. “The conference is also a great professional development opportunity for language and linguistics professionals from around the state.”
