UH Hilo student awarded two study abroad scholarships

A University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo senior majoring in Japanese Studies has received two scholarships totaling $9,500 to study abroad.

Andrew Jackson Musick IV received the Spring 2013 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the amount of $4,500 and the Freeman-ASIA Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. He will use the scholarships to study at the University of Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan, for a period of one year starting in April 2013.

Musick is an active member of Hui Okinawa and a drummer with Hui Okinawa Kobudo Taiko. He plays sanshin with Nidaime Tenshin Kai Hilo Shibu and teaches Classical Okinawan martial arts at the Waiakea Recreation Center. While abroad, he plans to immerse himself in learning Japanese and Uchinaguchi, the indigenous language of Okinawa.

The Gilman Scholarship was established to encourage students to select non-traditional study abroad destinations, and to support students traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to those in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds and those with disabilities.

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.
