UH Hilo graduate receives Fulbright Award
University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo alumna Shannon Costa has been awarded a 2012-2013 J. William Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Grant to teach English in Malaysia. Costa, who graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, is the second UH Hilo student to earn the Fulbright ETA.
Upon arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Costa will undergo basic Malay language training and be assigned to a primary or secondary school in the states of Terengganu, Pahang, or Johor. Costa will also visit various universities throughout the region to learn about current projects and research taking place in the agricultural community. She eventually plans to attend graduate school to pursue a degree in Asian Studies with an emphasis on Sustainable Agriculture.
“Programs like Fulbright provide an awesome opportunity to establish mutual understanding across boarders,” Costa said. “I believe it is so important at this point in our world to eliminate the idea of the ‘other,’ and replace it with feelings of true compassion.”
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. Over 300,000 individuals have participated in the program since its inception. Fulbright alumni includes heads of state, CEOs, journalists and 37 Nobel Peace Prize winners.
