New international film series to promote intercultural understanding

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo announces a new international film series called “Global Lens.” The series will feature seven unique and critically acclaimed films from around the world.

The first film, “Border Café,” will be shown on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 pm in Campus Center 307. There is no admission charge. Parking is free on campus after 4 pm.

Set in Iran, “Global Café” depicts a young woman with two children who faces a difficult choice when her husband dies. Instead of agreeing to marry her brother-in-law as required by traditional law, she chooses to support her family by re-opening her late husband’s café. Director Kambozia Partovi’s film examines the challenges facing women in contemporary Iranian society. “Global Café” is in Farsi, Greek, Turkish and Russian with English subtitles. The film won several international awards and was nominated for Best Feature Film at the 2005 Chicago International Film Festival.

The “Global Lens” film series will continue each month with a different film shown at 7 pm in Campus Center 307. Other films include Academy Award nominees for Best Foreign Language Film from Croatia, Vietnam, Cuba, Uruguay, Brazil and Lebanon. For a list of the films and specific dates, visit http://hilo.hawaii.edu/studentaffairs/international.

The films have been made available through the Global Film Initiative. The Global Film Initiative supports international filmmaker grants, educational programming and resources, and touring film exhibitions.

“Global Lens” is sponsored by the UH Hilo International Student Services and Intercultural Education Program and the International Student Association.
