For Immediate Release
The final IFSA Global Scholarships have been presented to three University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo students who will spend an entire academic year studying overseas beginning with the Fall 2012 semester.
Receiving scholarships were Zachary Mayberry, a senior majoring in Japanese Studies with an English minor who will study at Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, Japan, Mitchell Sambrano, a senior majoring in Japanese Studies and a Honoka`a High School graduate who is enrolling at Tokyo Gakugei University in Tokyo, Japan, and David Sellers, a sophomore and graduate from Kea’au High School who plans to attend Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide first-generation college students with financial need an opportunity to study abroad. Each student received $3,333, which was made possible through a grant sponsored by the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) Foundation located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Upon successfully completing the program, all recipients will undertake a service project to share the benefits of their experience with the community, and to encourage future students to study abroad.
The IFSA Foundation was established as a self liquidating foundation in 2004. The grant to UH Hilo came at a critical juncture to significantly boost participation in studying abroad by underserved students. UH Hilo now will be looking for private funds to replace the IFSA scholarship in order to keep study abroad accessible for its first-generation college students.
