For Immediate Release

The University of Hawai`i at Hilo Performing Arts and Communication Departments, in conjunction with the College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS), present a one-day workshop in Broadway Auditioning Techniques featuring New York actress and singer Lani Shipman. The workshop will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the UH Hilo Choral Rehearsal Room PB8-R, and will be open to both participants and observers.

Shipman will work one-on-one with students to help them refine their techniques, by giving each individual participant singing and auditioning pointers.

Participants will be charged a $50 fee and must prepare one song from the pre-approved list prior to the workshop for use during the class. Those who are not yet ready to sing professionally, but would like to listen in on the advice Shipman gives participants, can sign up as observers and will be charged $35.
Shipman, who grew up in Hilo, made her musical theatre debut at age 12 as Louisa Von Trapp in the UH Hilo production of The Sound of Music. She attended UH Hilo and graduated from the Performing Arts Department at the University of Southern California (USC), earning a BFA in acting.

Shipman spent several years as a session singer in Los Angeles, including cast recordings for MTI's School House Rock, Irving Berlin's Watch Your Step and the soundtrack to the film The Associate starring Whoopie Goldberg. She relocated to New York City in 2001, where she debuted at the Stage Door Canteen, a weekly live USO show for rescue workers at the World Trade Center.

The deadline to register is August 28, 2002. To register, or for additional information, please call CCECS at (808) 974-7664.
