For Immediate Release

When it rains, it pours was the order of the night on November 19 as 200 hardy souls braved a deluge to attend A Night in the Stacks 2010: Creating Legendary Friends with Caren Loebel-Fried at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Edwin H. Mookini Library.

The event was hosted by Chancellor Donald Straney, Esther “Kiki” Mookini, Interim Chancellor Noreen Yamane, and University Librarian Linda Marie Golian. Harry Kim and Julie Tulang served as honorary chairs and music was provided by Nanea.

A traditional Hawaiian blessing was performed by Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, translator of the featured book, Legend of the Gourd by Caren Loebel-Fried.

The $3,000 Chinese Civic Association of Hawaiʻi Scholarship was presented to Scott Albright by Newton Chu, the association’s president.

The event highlighted several art displays in the building, including over 45 pieces on loan from the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Art, a 20-item photo exhibit from the Inter-American Foundation, 16 UH Hilo artworks, seven quilts from the Zonta Club of Hilo’s Hands are Not for Hitting project, and 20 photographs by UH Hilo students and staff who’ve studied abroad.

Donations to the Edwin H. Mookini Library can be made online at www.uhfoundation.org/NighintheStacks 2010, or through the Office of Development at (808) 933-0829.
