Aloha and Welcome to the 2002-2003 Academic Year!

We have much to celebrate at the opening of Fall 2002. Opening of the academic year for both newcomers and oldtimers brings the excitement and optimism of a new beginning.

It’s a busy time — in addition to the usual getting-ready routines, we have the extra activity of moving into the new University Classroom Building. It is exciting activity, and also a time to reflect on our past achievements, and to look forward to new ones.

Sen. Inouye champions ag center at UHH Park

Hawai‘i’s senior U. S. senator, the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, says he is “deeply pleased” in the upcoming development of the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center in Hilo. PBARC, working collaboratively with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, UH M?noa, and other agricultural organizations throughout the state, will be located in UH Hilo’s University Park of Science and Technology.

Inouye made his remarks at a recent conference in Hilo sponsored by PBARC, where members of the state’s agriculture research and development community gathered to discuss ways of improving agriculture in Hawai‘i through collaboration and sharing of resources.

Development Highlights for Fiscal Year 2001-2002

Private Giving Advances the University

The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo is graced by tremendous support from the community. Those who have direct experience with UH Hilo and make an investment in it make a critical difference to the nature and quality of programs that the University can offer. With the fiscal year ending June, 2002, UH Hilo received $810,634 in gifts.

Without these much needed private resources, the University could not have provided as much student support, purchased as much equipment and teaching materials, or provided financial aid to as many students as it was able to this year. Whether is was tuition assistance for a student, a care package for a student athlete, a sailboat for our sailing team, or support for our Hawaiian language center, each gift made a difference to the educational experience here.
