B.A. established in Health and Physical Education

The University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents (BOR) approved the establishment of a bachelor of arts degree in health and physical education (HPE) in the College of Arts and Sciences at UH Hilo, effective fall 2002. The announcement was made at the board’s monthly meeting held June 21 at Windward Community College.

“The major will prepare students for recreation-related careers and for entry into post-baccalaureate teacher education programs, in particular the program offered at UH Hilo,” said Christopher Lu, vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Chancellor’s Year-End Message

Looking back on this academic year, I am pleased with our progress, both inside the University and with our community outreach projects. Thank you, everyone, for your hard work and dedication every day throughout the year. This has been a very productive year:

  • We are offering our students more educational opportunities with newly developed programs, student research, and community service-learning activities
  • We are building strong community partnerships with county, state, and federal agencies
  • We are creating strong ties with local business and industry, and helping to strengthen our island’s economy
  • Our grant funding and research activity continue to grow
  • Our student enrollment continues to increase
  • We are completing the revision of UH Hilo’s strategic plan
  • And we are participating in the development of the UH system strategic plan

Yes, it’s been a busy and productive year as we strive to offer the best teaching and learning environment for our students.

2001-2002: A year of outstanding progress at UHH

September 2001

  • Fall 2001 marks the fourth consecutive year of growth in student enrollment — a 10 percent overall increase. In the current U.S. News and World Report collegiate rankings, UH Hilo ranks 9th nationwide among liberal arts colleges in campus diversity (the only public school in the top 10) and 14th nationwide among liberal arts colleges in percentage of international students (10%).
  • The University community pulls together in peace following Sept. 11, with student organizations holding candlelight vigils and other gatherings to honor those lost in the tragedies, and professors conducting open forums to discuss historical, political and cultural perspectives of the events.
