Aloha everyone and welcome to Fall 1999 and the first edition of Looking Around the Corner. I will be using this as a way of keeping in touch with one another.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to everyone! Once again University of Hawaii at Hilo ranked third in the top regional public liberal arts colleges in the West, by US News & World Report. The rankings are based on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. Ranking third is a testimony to your dedication and commitment to excellence, and I want to applaud and sincerely thank everyone.

I would like to call your attention to the August 20 issue of KuLama which lists the 1999 Tenure and Promotion. We recognized Bruce Mathews, Karla McDermid and Robert Watson at Fall Convocation, and I want to once again say congratulations in recognition of your scholarship and contribution to our University.
