Pulama Goals and Objectives
The purpose of the 2009 Pulama I Ke Ola conference is to bring together a diverse array of individuals from all the islands of Hawaii; the approach in 2009 is to continue to build strong ties among the major Hawaiian Islands. With the topics relevant to public health, this conference continues ties with the HPHA which was established by its 2008 partnership with UH Hilo’s Pulama I Ke Ola. The conference serves the continuing education needs of multidisciplinary health professionals throughout the state, but, particularly, those who come from various public health sectors on the islands Hawaii, who would otherwise have limited access to continuing education offerings.
The overall goal is to improve statewide public health infrastructure and practices by sharing effective strategies and models of application, across all the islands, especially in rural and undeserved areas of the state. Of particular interest are exemplars of programs on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii that address health disparities through the use of effective education, research and strategies that may assist others in underserved areas to develop responses to their own local requirements.
The overall conference objects articulate with the proposed goal and purpose:
At the end of this conference, the participant will be able to:
1. Recall at least two access barriers to healthcare faced by special populations.
2. Describe at least two programs or services that are successful in responding to patient needs for access and navigating through the healthcare system.
