The TEP at UH Hilo is a post-baccalaureate program designed to qualify students for a license by the State of Hawaii. Please visit the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) web site at www.htsb.org for information on licensing. Students who consider seeking licensure should begin preparation during their undergraduate program of study. To prepare adequately, students should contact the Education Department at 974-7582 to make an appointment.
Admission to the TEP is for Fall entry only, and enables a cohort of full-time students to complete instructional and field experiences together during the Fall and Spring semesters. Applicants must have completed all degree and designated prerequisite courses and supplemental course requirements prior to the Fall semester entry into the program.
The need for qualified teachers in Hawaii is constant. Shortage areas in the state mathematics, science, vocational education, special education and Hawaiian Language, especially immersion programs. TEP graduates are successfully employed in teaching upon completion of the program.
TEP Graduates (Elementary) SY 2006-2007
TEP graduates will be recommended for state licensure, receive a Certificate in Teacher Education, and be able to:
- Engage students in appropriate experiences that support their development as independent learners.
- Create and maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provide learning opportunities that are inclusive and adapted to diverse learners.
- Foster effective communication in the learning environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of content.

- Demonstrate professionalism.
- Foster parent and school community relationships.
