What is the Chemistry Placement Exam?
The Chemistry Placement Exam is a sixty question multiple choice exam that covers general mathematics (20 questions), general chemical knowledge (20 questions), and specific chemical knowledge (20 questions). It is assumed that students have had one full year of high school chemistry and full year of high school algebra.
The purpose of the exam is assist with the placement of students in college-level general chemistry courses where they will have a high probability of success. Students scoring 36 or above (out of 60, or 40%) will be allowed to register for CHEM 124 while those scoring below 36 will be placed in CHEM 114.
Who takes the exam?
- You should take the exam if you have been accepted at UH Hilo and your course of study requires General Chemistry 124/125.
- You do not have to take the exam if you were enrolled in CHEM 124 in the previous year but either dropped or failed the course.
- You do not have to take the exam if you have taken CHEM 114 and earned a grade of C or better.
Registration Instructions
You must register for a seat for the exam by completing the online registration from. Contact the exam coordinator if you are unable to use the online registration form. Registration is limited to the number of seats for each exam date; however, walk-in seating will be available only after those who have registered have been accommodated.
- All students registered or not, must check in at the exam site no later than 10 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time.
- All currently enrolled students must bring their UH Hilo photo ID. All newly accepted students must bring their acceptance letter and a photo ID.
What happens on the day of the exam?
Please bring the following to the exam:
- your registration email confirmation,
- two #2 pencils (mechanical pencils are okay),
- an eraser
- a calculator
- photo ID,
- proof of UHH ID number of Social Security number
You will be given sixty minutes to complete the exam.

Note: If you will need disability accommodations to take the exam, you must contact the Exam Coordinator at least 10 days prior to the scheduled exam.

How and when may I get my results?
Before you take the exam, the exam proctor will give you an estimated time of results availability. When they become available, you can access your results by clicking on the "Search for Your Exam Results" link in the above left-hand column.
