The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo has been a designated Native Hawaiian Serving Institution (NHSI) since 2000 and has been eligible to receive Title III funding from the U.S. Department of Education. Programs developed through Title III have been successful in increasing Native Hawaiian student access to UH Hilo, and in increasing retention and graduation rates. In addition, the programs have expanded Native Hawaiian student access to and competency in technology through asynchronous Internet learning opportunities.
Funding is currently being used to develop and improve academic curricula to incorporate a Hawaiian foundation and perspective, establish a professional development program to increase faculty and staff knowledge and awareness of Hawaiian perspectives, and to provide increased access to Hawaiian language resource materials.
