The central goal of PRISM is to improve the interest and performance of Hawaii’s K-8 students in math and science. This goal is addressed through the creation of investigative, standards-based curricula in science, math, and technology that are both relevant and accessible to Hawaii’s rural student population. Curricula is designed in partnerships between Hawaii’s educators and science graduate students (fellows) at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Graduate student fellows work within Hawaii’s schools to create the curricula with educators in real classrooms. Waimea students built their own native insects while incorporating lessons of adaptation. Waikoloa students discovered how Hawaiian monk seals use sandy shores on a virtual expedition to the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. Keaukaha students learned about the ahu`pua`a and Hawaiian forests. Check out the Curricula page for downloadable lessons, videos, presentations, examples of student work and lots of pictures!! Also see the News and Events page to read what PRISM's teachers and fellows will be doing in the coming months.
