Faculty Guidelines for WI Courses

As part of the systemwide movement to incorporate more writing in courses ftom all disciplines, faculty are invited to submit applications to designate their courses as Writing-Intensive (WI).

Faculty should submit the WI Application form.

Faculty should consider the following criteria as they develop WI courses:

  • A minimum of 16 typed pages of text (or 4,000 words)
  • A variety of writing activities
    • Informal: learning logs, journals, dialogue notes, in-class assignments
    • Formal: essays, research papers/reports, summaries, responses, analyses
  • Evaluative feedback from instructor and/or peers; written and/or verbal
  • Opportunity for revision after student receives feedback from instructor
  • Writing should constitute at least 40% of the final course grade
  • Enrollment should be capped at 20 students

Important Dates for Renewal/New WI Course Proposals

  • Summer/Fall Course Proposal Due Date: February 1st
  • Notification of Fall Course Approval: March 1st
  • Spring Course Proposal Due Date: September 15th
  • Notification of Spring Course Approval: October 1st
