NHERC Credit Courses

NHERC offers UH Hilo credit courses for undergraduate students who are both classified and unclassified students. Students can register for online courses through their MyUH account. To register for our on-site courses, please call NHERC directly at (808) 775-8890 or e-mail nherc@hawaii.edu.

Spring 2010 UH Hilo On-Site Credit Courses at NHERC

  • French 102 – Elementary French II

With Instructor Kamila Dudley                

Location: NHERC in Honoka‘a    

This introductory French language course is taught through conversation, laboratory drill, grammar, reading; and the use of film strips, interactive software, slides and tapes. This course fulfills a UH Hilo general education area requirement in the humanities. 4 credits. Prerequisite: a "B" or higher in French 101 or instructor's consent

Mondays 5:00 pm – 7:40 pm and Thursdays 5:00 pm - 6:40 pm  

  • Art 109 – Introduction to Drawing and Painting

With Lecturer Keith Tallett   

Location: NHERC in Honoka‘a    

Studio experiences for non-majors. Emphasis on formal concepts in drawing and painting. The course incorporates various drawing and painting media into exercises, projects, and lectures to develop personal expression. This course fulfills a UH Hilo general education area requirement in the humanities. 3 credits.

  • Business 100 – Introduction to Business

With Dr. Guy Kaulukukui

Location: NHERC in Honoka‘a                          

A study of business functions, methods of business operation, types of business ownership, and the role of business organizations in contemporary society. This course fulfills a UH Hilo general education area requirement in social science. 3 credits.

  • Anthropology 100- Cultural Anthropology

With Dr. Momi Naughton

Location: Kanu o ka ‘Aina in Waimea    

Humans as cultural and social beings. The major concepts and conclusions of cultural anthropology. Biological, social, and linguistic foundations of culture. Basic research methodology. This course fulfills a UH Hilo general education area requirement in social science or world cultures. 3 credits.

The course includes the fundamental concepts of interpersonal communication: verbal and nonverbal exchange in face-to-face encounters.  This course can be applied toward a UH Hilo general education area requirement in the humanities.

  • Geography 102 – Geography of World Regions (online)

With Lecturer Drew Kapp                                           CRN: 12912

Here is a geographic survey of the world’s major cultural regions. The class includes natural resource distribution, and contrasts and links the developed and under-developed worlds. It can be applied toward a UH Hilo general education area requirement in the social sciences.

  • Communications 287 – Media Writing Practicum (online)

With Instructor Patsy Iwasaki                                     CRN: 12913 or 12971

Students will build their portfolios by developing articles and submitting them for publication as well as for class credit. This class fulfills a Writing Intensive requirement.

  • Communications 444 - Public Relations (online)

With Associate Professor Steve Miura                        CRN: 12968

An overview of the practice of public relations in business, educational institutions, non profit organizations, and government. Students will learn how to interact with public relations professionals, the media, write press releases, and design and evaluate campaigns. Prerequisite: COM 251 or instructor's consent.
