Spring 2010 Non-Credit Course Offerings

 

  • Adult and Pediatric CPR

This is a double-certificate course offered on one Saturday morning by Mary S. Wood, a certified instructor for the National Safety Council. The certificates will cover infants to 8-year-olds and also adults. The CPR certificate is required by many employers and many childcare providers. Certificates are valid for two years.

  • Backyard Astronomy

This basic observational astronomy course will present some of the most important discoveries of modern astronomy that participants can observe for themselves in the night sky with the unaided eye—if they know what to look for. These classes are especially suitable for families or teachers who can practice observational exercises in their “backyards” between sessions. Instructor Graham Knopp has a PhD in astronomy.

  • Basic Slack Key Guitar with Keoki Kahumoku

Join this popular musician and instructor in a review of basic techniques as well as left-and-right-handed exercises that will help you create the island sound. You will receive an introduction to basic music theory and tab reading in an informal setting.

  • Beginning/Refresher Ukulele

Keoki Kahumoku has been part of four Hawaiian Grammy award-winning albums. He is a comfortable, skilled teacher happy to share his knowledge. Listen along with Keoki’s music and improve your playing. These five classes will be easygoing and informative.

  • The Five Elements: The Chinese Approach to Well-Being

Traditionally earth, fire, wood, water and metal are discussed in terms of achieving a balance in life for optimal health. Join naturopath Shanon Sidell, ND, for a glimpse of this ancient Chinese approach and find out how the five elements relate to you.

  • Hiking into the Past

Dr. Hugh Montgomery will connect stories about the past with the actual places the events are said to have occurred. Traditional place names allow us to hike to storied areas of the past. Participants will first meet to decide which stories to pursue.

  • Self Defense for Women

In these one-hour sessions you will learn the basics of how to protect yourself through simple exercises to promote strength and flexibility. Avoidance techniques will be taught. Increase your self-confidence and awareness. Instructor Zerlina Young is an experienced instructor; these valuable techniques are suitable for women of all ages.
