Step-by-step Directions: Laulima
Student Welcome Page
UHH Home > Academics > Distance Learning
This skeleton welcome page combines information from welcome pages used on two completely online courses developed by UH Hilo faculty. The welcome page appears in the middle of each Laulima course homepage, under the heading “Worksite Information.” It can be used to introduce students to the Laulima course website and to provide essential information about the software, including the right browser, they need to access course materials.
This document is in Word. (1) You can open it, edit it to fit your course, and save it as a Web page, then upload it to Resources and link it to the "Worksite Information" section of your homepage via the Options/Site info URL slot. The advantage of doing it this way is that the hot links will stay hot.
Or (2) you can copy and paste it directly into the Options html screen, edit it there. This method requires you to make the links yourself. The last page of this document provides the actual URLs, in case you choose this option.
This sample page begins with an introduction to the Laulima course tools [just edit out the ones you are not using] and instructions on how to get help from the Laulima techies and from the instructor, how download free Firefox, how to check for Java/java_script [if you are using narrated Powerpoint], and how to download free QuickTime [if you are using narrated Keynote].
You can insert photos, images (including movies), and other links to make this welcome entirely your own.

Welcome to [your course]
[semester and year]
[Your title and name]--UH Hilo
Overview of Course Tools. This course website provides many of the resources offered to students in the course. In addition, you are expected to purchase the textbooks listed in the syllabus (see below on how to access the syllabus). Note that you can Google almost all of the poems we will be reading from the poetry anthology.
First see the sections below on browsers and QuickTime/Jawa/popups. Then, to the immediate left of this message you will see a list of links (in aqua blue font). Please click on each one, beginning with "Syllabus," and working your way down through "Mail."
* "Syllabus and Course Schedule" is where you will find the course syllabus, with the schedule of assignments and exams attached. Be sure to read each section carefully. The schedule is subject to modifcation as the semester progresses.
* "Announcements" are posted on this homepage, to the right of this welcome message.
* "Modules" is where you will access the basic materials, lecture notes, some readings, details of assignments, and the four study units--picture books, folk tales, poetry, and novels.
* "Assignments" is where you will find instructions for the written assignments and due dates; this is also where you will submit these assignments, and where you will receive them back from the instructor.
* "Gradebook" shows you (and only you!) your grades, which are posted by your instructor when she returns your assignments on the Assignments page.
* "Discussion Board" is where you will participate in class discussions about issues and topics raised by the instructor and students. These will occur on those three periods when the instructor is away (on the mainland, on Guam, and in Singapore).
* "Mail" is where you can email the instructor or individual classmates privately.
