Nursing Baccalaureate Program, RN To BSN By Distance Learning

The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo), in collaboration with the University Centers at Kauai CC, Maui CC, and West Hawaii, is initiating distance delivery of its Baccalaureate Nursing Program for RNs, beginning in Spring 2004. The program is identical to the successful residential RN to BSN program that has been offered at UH Hilo since 1992.

The courses for the BSN program will be delivered to distant sites using any of a variety of methods, such as: (1) interactive television (ITV), (2) Internet-based e-mail, WebCT, and/or streaming video, and (3) on-site, in-person instruction. Plans are for 1-2 courses to be progressively added for distance delivery until the full RN to BSN program is available via distance, as planned, by 2006.

Admission Requirements

Students must have a minimum overall college cumulative GPA of 2.7. All natural sciences courses must be passed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7. (RNs actively working within the last 5 years can have the 10-year age limit on natural science courses waived.) A current Hawaii RN license is required. Special professional practice requirements must be met, such as CPR, immunizations, and TB clearance (specific requirements will be provided at the time of admission). Admission will be limited to qualified applicants for each admission cycle. Students will be placed into a course sequence according to the schedule of available courses (see proposed course schedule). Students who are not able to proceed with the planned course sequence will be able to take the necessary courses when next offered. Graduation Requirements

All UH Hilo graduation requirements must be met. This includes 30 UH Hilo credits, of which 24 UH Hilo BSN nursing credits are required to qualify for the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Students are expected to maintain close communication with their advisers and consult the UH Hilo catalog for the most updated information. All nursing students are expected to complete all courses within a five year time period.

Degree Requirements

Graduates with an ADN (AS in Nursing degree) from a UH community college can have 30 nursing credits applied toward the UH Hilo BSN degree. These credits contribute to the BSN degree total of 128-130 credits.

Graduates of diploma schools or Associate Degree (ADN) schools of nursing that are not accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) are required to take the NLN ACE II Tests, which include three tests 1) Adult Care; 2) Childbearing and Care of Child (presented in two parts), and (3) Client with Mental Disorder. The perspective UH-Hilo RN to BSN student must pass the NLN ACE II tests with at least 70% of the questions answered correctly in order to obtain college equivalency credits.
