The mission of OLLI at UH Hilo is to nurture the mind, body, and spirit of persons aged 50 and over, by utilizing the unique cultural and physical features of Hawai`i island. There are no tests, grades, or papers – just learning for enjoyment, personal growth and intellectual stimulation and community.

OLLI at UH Hilo is one of over 120 OLLIs at universities nationwide, ranging from mega-universities like the University of California at Berkeley and Johns Hopkins University to small liberal arts colleges in the Midwest. All share the common goals of providing more mature students with opportunities to learn for the joy of learning and to develop vibrant learning communities within OLLI.

Lecture and seminar series, short courses, educational activities and events are planned by local community members, in collaboration with OLLI coordinators. These noncredit courses and programs are taught by active and retired university faculty as well as talented members of our island's adult community. Classes are being offered in locations in East and North Hawai`i. Additional sites and courses will be added as the OLLI program grows, with the eventual goal of creating an islandwide lifelong learning network.

OLLI members enjoy many benefits: $5 discounts on all OLLI courses and on many Fitness for Life and SeniorNet courses, special invitations to many UH Hilo events, discounts on select UH Hilo athletics and performing arts events - all designed to bring OLLI members together in a community of learners.

Partnered with the OLLI program is the SeniorNet Learning Center, which offers affordable computer classes for people over 50 taught by seniors for seniors. Hilo SeniorNet is part of SeniorNet, a non-profit educational organization with over 200 learning centers across the United States, Canada and Japan.

Collaboration

The OLLI program partners with art centers, theatres, libraries, schools, clubs, and federal, state, county, and community organizations and businesses around the island. These partnerships include sponsorship, volunteerism, collaborative programming, off-campus venues, and participation by member groups.
