Irish Film: The “Troubles” in Northern Ireland
Focusing on films that deal with the conflicts in Northern Ireland known as “The Troubles”, UHH English professor Kirsten Mollegaard takes students through a cinematic journey dealing with one of the most violent periods in recent Irish history. “Troubles” films represent many different perspectives and often depict terror and brutality involving the Irish Republic Army (IRA) and the British authorities while taking sides. However, they also give voice to the victims of these conflicts, and to common concerns in the 9/11 world. The films selected for this course are The Crying Game, The Boxer, Omagh, and Bloody Sunday.
