Our second trip to Hakalau was in November of 2000.
Again, we helped start koa keikis for Baron's greenhouse.

The boys, Ryan, Nathan and Emil and Bill and Kim work diligently planting koa seedlings outside the greenhouse.

Here, Springer is holding an 'elepaio, telling us the tell-tale characteristics to look for to identify this bird, such as it's "necklace" of white feathers.

We were fortunate to be there at the same time as a couple of researchers from Manoa, Springer and Jonah.  We had the opportunity to help them catch, measure, weigh and tag some native birds, such as the 'i'iwi and the 'elepaio while on our hike.

This shot was taken just as Starla was releasing the 'elepaio.

Baron is always generous with his knowledge of native plant species.  Here he is telling us about the rare Hawaiian mints.

More of Baron's rare Hawaiian plants.
