 
The study will be conducted as a collaborative project coordinated jointly
by the US Fish and Wildlife
Service, Division of Ecological Services, the Hawaii Division of
Forestry and Wildlife, and the University
of Hawaii at Hilo - College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural
Resource Management. Collaborating investigators include wildlife managers
from the US Army Range and Environmental Divisions, and the US Forest
Service Pacific Southwest Research Station and Institute of Pacific
Islands Forestry. Other collaborating partners include the National
Park Service, Hawaii County Fire Department, Federal Fire Department
at Pohakuloa, Hawaii County Civil Defense, the North Kona Fuels Management
Group, Colorado
State University, and other members of the Big Island Wildfire Coordinating
Group. In addition, prescribed fire experts from the Forest Service's
Region 6 (California) will review prescribed burn plans and oversee
administration of the prescribed burns.
Funding for this project is provided by the National Joint Fire Science
Program, a partnership of six federal agencies addressing wildland fuels
and fire issues as directed in Congress. The agencies include the Bureau
of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service,
US Fish and Wildlife Service,
and US Geological Survey within DOI, and the USDA Forest Service.
