Course Description: This class is a three-credit survey course of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. It includes a brief introduction to organic chemistry (nomenclature and reactions), and selected topics in biochemistry of interest to students in health and related fields (for example: proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and metabolism as it relates to each of these). Pre: Chem 114 (or high school chemistry).

Recommended Text: Study Guide & Selected Solutions Manual, 3rd Ed., 1999; Susan McMurry

Course Format & Student Responsibilities

  1. There will be one homework assignment given in lecture each week and collected on the following Wednesday (with appropriate exceptions for holidays).
  2. Fourteen weekly quizzes covering the past week’s material will be given each Friday (with appropriate exceptions for holidays).
  3. It is your responsibility to read the assigned sections and chapters, and to take the quizzes. There will be no make-up quizzes.
  4. At the instructor’s discretion, extra credit assignments may be given during the semester.
  5. The final exam will be worth 150 points (about 28.5% of your overall grade). It must be taken on or before the date designated in the Schedule of Classes, Monday, May 8th at 9:40 am.
  6. We will be covering the entire text from Chapter 1 to Chapter 17, time permitting. A tentative schedule is attached.
  7. The last day to withdraw without an "F" is March 3rd. Please be sure to notify me if you decide to withdraw.
  8. Your overall grade will be based on items 1., 2., and 5.
  9. Homework = 75 points

    A = 467-525pts. (89-100%)
    Quizzes = 300 points B = 409-466pts. (78-88%)
    Final = 150 points C = 331-408pts. (63-77%)
      D = 262-330pts. (50-62%)
      F = <261pts. (<50%)
